Subject: Searching across boards, plus Shrewdness-stars
Is there a way to see all the posts on the different topics without going to each topic separately?
You can click 'Threaded' when browsing a board which shows only the first post, so you can extremely efficiently look across many threads. Visit Personal Settings to change the number of posts viewed at once. To look at posts across different boards, you can click 'Best of' and it will show all the interesting posts across all boards in the last rolling 24 hours, as well as the last month.
You can also search across boards by clicking 'Followed Shrews' (click the smiling face when reading a post to follow them) which is different to 'Best of' in that it lists all recent posts by those users rather than sorting by recommendations.
Having the boards distinct and generally more focussed (cross referencing is typically done by copy-pasting a URL, rather than entering the information twice) I do suspect is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Some Shrewds like moving in the opposite direction to Twitter/Instagram/Facebook where information is mixed together - in the extreme case the mind becomes a type of slush!
The earlier TMF boards were not merely different subjects, but different cultures.
It is well researched how having rapidly changing stimuli can presented in an addive way. The analogy isn't perfect, but you can drink 4L of extra sweetened lemonade each day, and feel great, and you body will urge you to continue.. leading to a physical disaster. We needing to protect our minds by avoiding pollutive addictive information environments.
When mungofitch did not post 90 days ago, a lot of people were perplexed (and many more genuinely sad!) but dare I say his decision might have been in part his instinctive insight, along with self-respect, in managing his own external stimuli rather than just accepting whatever is pushed in front of him - to put it crudely, as taking care with what we put in their body or at least not automatically eating whatever sugary substance is served by someone, without us actually selecting it for ourselves.
Yesterday I programmed a feature to Shrewdom in which Shrewdish-stars show against each author based on the average number of post recommendations made over the trailing 12 months The number of points around the star match this average (hover the mouse cursor over the medals to see its meaning). This might encourage a higher quality/quanity of posts over time, as the 12 month period is long enough for people to want to build up long-term track record, but not so long that you feel it can't be changed by publishing better posts. This might give pride to the author and certainly joy to the reader, and systematically lifts the quality-concentration of the boards as a whole. So let's Shrewd it!
