I'm now retired so this was a long time ago, somewhere in the mid 1990s. We had bought a neural net software package to train/use on some data and was curious whether it would work better than the algorithms we had created. We found out that the software (the neural net software) was originally created by a guy who was trying to predict the stock market. It didn't work back then but obviously technology has greatly improved.

In our case we got it to somewhat succeed although I don't think anyone did anything further with it once I left the group.
